Sony is presenting for this week a new PS5 firmware in prospect, which will enable, among other things, the VRR feature. One of the first games to benefit from this is Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered.
Patch 1.007 is now available on PS5, and it represents a genuine technical upgrade to the game. In addition to VRR, it also offers the 120fps option and, optionally, some graphical enhancements.
"All our PS5 titles now support VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) with the latest game and system updates. Since our titles are already designed for very stable frame rates, the main effect of the VRR system setting is to slightly increase the dynamic refresh rate targets."

VRR is only possible with HDMI 2.1.
To benefit from these new features, you must use a TV with HDMI 2.1 and configure the corresponding settings on the TV. Once the update is available on the PS5, the VRR feature will be automatically activated for compatible games. For this to work, the PS5 console must be directly connected to the appropriate HDMI port. It is not yet known whether passthrough will also be supported.

Whether the VRR feature ultimately performs as expected remains to be seen. The games officially announced so far run quite well even without VRR. Therefore, it would be interesting to see what the PS5 can do when that's not the case.
