Microsoft has released Sim Update 5 for "Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024". The most important news for console pilots: PlayStation VR2 is now natively supported on the PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro. With this update, Asobo closes one of the biggest gaps for VR enthusiasts on consoles and simultaneously delivers massive optimizations for system stability and memory management across all platforms.
The update, version 1.7.27.0, marks a turning point for virtual reality in simulators. In addition to PS VR2 integration, specific graphics settings for VR on the PS5 have been added, and the way the system switches to VR mode has been fundamentally reworked to avoid memory overload.
Career mode and certifications expanded
The core gameplay receives significant content enhancements. Pilots can now obtain certifications for "Heavy" and "Oversized" (formerly Super Heavy) within their career. VTOL certification is also now unlocked, massively expanding the operational range of vertical takeoff and landing aircraft in the structured game mode.
Technically, the team has refined the aerodynamics: The simulation of updrafts in storms and the ground effect for helicopters has been improved. New sim attachments, the Avidyne IFD540 and IFD550, are now available for developers, which should increase the system depth of future add-on aircraft.
Massive optimizations under the hood
Sim Update 5 also corrects numerous performance hogs in the “Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024"The system for parked cars at airports has been optimized, as have the particle effects and building generation. Most critically, a memory error that led to random crashes has been fixed."
The list of aircraft fixes is long and affects almost every standard model. For the Airbus A330, issues with fuel calculation and missing cargo containers were resolved, while the Boeing 747 series received improvements to VNAV calculation and autothrottle tracking. The C-17 Globemaster III also underwent a comprehensive overhaul, including corrected TACAN navigation and an improved flight director in the HUD.
What the update means for players
For PS VR2 owners, MSFS 2024 is now a must-buy, as cockpit immersion is virtually impossible to replicate without a VR headset. All other players will benefit from a more stable foundation. The optimizations in rendering and cockpit code should be particularly noticeable in more stable frame rates at complex, large airports.
- VR integration: PS VR2 is now fully supported, including specific PS5 menus.
- Stability: Critical crashes when using Frame Generation and Smart Docking have been fixed.
- Career: New specializations (Heavy/Oversized) enhance long-term gameplay enjoyment.
- Technique: Improved helicopter physics and optimized culling in the renderer.
Sim Update 5 is more than just a bug fix package. The integration of PS VR2 is a strategically smart move to fully utilize the powerful hardware of the PS5 Pro. Technically, the simulator is now significantly more mature, although PC users should still keep an eye on their community folders for performance issues. The optimizations to memory management are essential for long-term stability during intercontinental flights.

That moment when Microsoft develops more PS VR 2 games than Sony
Finally, I've been waiting for the VR update. Very immersive.
But I have to say it's a good game even without VR.
