The PlayStation 4 will initially not be able to play normal audio CDs and MP3 files; this will only be made possible through a post-launch update.
Sony World Wide Studio boss, Shuhei Yoshida, was downright surprised from the negative feedback that followed this announcement. According to Yoshida, it wasn't as if these features were deliberately omitted to push players into a Music Unlimited subscription. The focus was rather on game features, as well as others that they knew couldn't be implemented in time for launch, but MP3 and CD support were never seriously considered. Yoshida jokingly added that if the lack of MP3 support was the biggest problem for players, then they must have done most things right with the PS4.
The system engineers in Japan are now discussing this possibility and when the feature will be delivered.
