Nioh 3 will receive a free update on April 27th. Team NINJA is bringing new High-Difficulty Battle Scrolls, the Stone of Penance, and fresh skills to the game.

Koei Tecmo and Team NINJA will release a free content update for "Nioh 3" on April 27th, introducing new high-level Battle Scrolls and additional reward skills. The update expands the endgame with new, extremely difficult Battle Scrolls and implements the "Stone of Penance," a mechanic for targeted upgrades of accessories.

New endgame challenges and loot mechanics

The centerpiece of the update is the addition of Battle Scrolls, which function as challenging side missions. These not only provide a challenge but are also directly tied to character progression: completing specific high-difficulty scrolls unlocks new skills. With this, Team NINJA continues its tradition of enclosing gameplay complexity behind mechanical skill, rather than granting it solely through leveling up.

Additionally, the Stone of Penance returns. This mechanic allows players to artificially increase the game's difficulty in exchange for increasing the rarity and bonus stats of their accessories. For optimizers, this is the crucial tool for advancing min-maxing in build testing.

Balance adjustments and technical outlook

Alongside the content updates, the developer is making adjustments to the so-called "Graces." The goal is to strengthen underrepresented set bonuses and increase the variance in player builds. This is a standard process at Team NINJA to nip a dominant meta in the bud.

Interestingly, producer Kohei Shibata confirmed that this is just the beginning. In addition to further free patches, more extensive paid DLCs are already planned for later in 2026.

Those who put "Nioh 3" aside after the campaign now have a reason to return. The combination of new skills and the Stone of Penance is explicitly aimed at the core community, who have invested hundreds of hours in build optimization.

Why “Nioh 3” is a hidden gem for those seeking a challenge is revealed our review to the game.
