When a series veteran like Nioh When a new era begins, it's worth taking a closer look. Nioh 3 Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja leave familiar territory and jump directly into the Bakumatsu period, the moment when Japan's samurai order began to crumble. The series thus ventures into politically and culturally charged years that few action RPGs have yet convincingly portrayed.

Kyoto in the 19th century feels less like a historical backdrop and more like a setting in a state of emergency. Landmarks such as Kiyomizu-ji and Honnō-ji temples are visibly scarred by "purgatory," a supernatural influence that makes yokai even more aggressive, unpredictable, and alien. For fans who have been hoping for ever-new enemy types since the first installment, this phase of the series could be the most daring yet.

The Shinsengumi brings modern weapons

One particularly exciting aspect is the Shinsengumi. This elite unit of the Shogunate not only appears as a historical backdrop but also changes the nature of combat itself. For the first time in the series, human opponents use modern weapons: pistols, rifles, even Gatling guns. This opens up entirely new attack patterns – ranged volleys, changes of direction, open spaces that suddenly offer no safety.

This blend of ancient blades and industrial firepower could give the series a much-needed breath of fresh air. Team Ninja maintains its pace but expands it with mechanics previously reserved for shooters. Whether this will work for every veteran remains to be seen, but the approach seems well thought out.

Historical encounters and a real-life exhibition

During his journey, the protagonist Takechiyo Tokugawa encounters influential figures of the era: Takasugi Shinsaku, Okita Sōji, and Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last shogun. Such encounters can easily degenerate into mere cameos, but precisely Nioh It was always strongest when real history and mystical exaggeration intertwined.

Also noteworthy is the step beyond the game itself: Nioh 3 will become part of a samurai team in February 2026Exhibition at the British MuseumThe fact that an action RPG is being released there shows the cultural significance the series has now achieved, and that Team Ninja is apparently willing to take historical authenticity more seriously without losing its fantasy core.

When Nioh 3 Does the series truly maintain the balance between historical depth, modern combat systems, and Yokai fantasy? Will we witness the boldest step in the series or a risky break?
