Sony has now officially confirmed what had been increasingly speculated in recent days: Zipper Interactive, the Seattle-based developer of SOCOM, has been shut down.
According to Sony, the studio's closure is a normal part of resource conservation within World Wide Studios. Zipper Interactive's last projects were Unit 13 on PS Vita, MAG, and SOCOM 4, which will continue to be supported.
Zipper Interactive existed since 1996 and was acquired by Sony in 2006 and integrated into World Wide Studios. With its closure, another studio with historical roots disappears from the scene.
Zipper Interactive has now also released an official statement on this matter:
"After 17 years, it's time to look down. A heartfelt thank you to all our fans for everything they've done for us. Goodbuy."
We wish the employees of Zipper Interactive all the best and hope they quickly find somewhere else to stay.
