Aside from the official announcement and a first screenshot of 'Outlast 2', very little is known about the game so far. Red Barrels co-founder Philippe Morin, however, has been somewhat more forthcoming these days, revealing that they will not be returning to the setting of the original.

Rather, Outlast 2 is based on the Jonestown Massacre of 1978, in which over 900 members of a cult took their own lives. This is considered the largest mass suicide of all time.

“There’s one thing we studied extensively for the second game – the Jonestown massacre in the 70s, which is considered the largest suicide of all time,” said Morin. “I think that’s something we studied and verified in depth and took as inspiration for Outlast 2.”

According to Morin, this inspiration would fit perfectly into the Outlast universe and bridge the gap between the two games. They wanted something that would make players wonder what the hell was going on, which is also one of the reasons they left Mount Massive Asylum behind. It was meant to be something completely new and give players the same feeling they had when entering the Asylum.

Outlast 2 will be released sometime this year. Red Barrels also hopes to release the game simultaneously on all platforms.
