Hardly announced, and industry specialist Michael Pachter already has some not particularly positive things to say about Project Morpheus, which he considers a bad idea for Sony.
While the hardware itself is a good thing, tenants don't believeHe believes there will be a large market for it. He doubts that enough content will be developed for Project Morpheus, and without content, the hardware won't sell. This is the so-called "devil's rice" that Pachter is referring to.
He sees better chances for the Oculus Rift project, however, since it's a small start-up. If it's successful and dominates the market, that would be a good thing. But if the market remains small and there are few buyers, it will be difficult to make money. Sony is certainly capable of achieving the same as Oculus Rift. If Oculus Rift were to sell one million units, it would be a success. For Sony, however, one million units would be just a hiccup.
Pachter compares the VR headset trend to 3D, which no one seemed to care about. He therefore assumes that it, too, will remain a small market.
