Sony has once again raised the price of PlayStation Plus, angering new customers just before the end of the month. The community is reacting with massive discontent to the ongoing monetization pressure in the console ecosystem.

According to a PushSquare survey, only 18 percent of players still agree with the Playstation Plus EssentialThe tariff offers fair value for money, although this cannot yet be considered representative of the PlayStation world. Nevertheless, acceptance of Sony's paywall policy is noticeably declining at the grassroots level.

The figures on customer alienation

A survey conducted immediately after the studio's statement among thousands of active users now reveals the extent of the creeping damage to the service's image. A whopping 64 percent of respondents consider the basic subscription simply overpriced in the current market environment. Only 18 percent of participants still see the offer as genuine value for their money, while the rest remain undecided. The foundation is crumbling.

The price adjustment increases the cost of a single month to €9,99 and the quarterly subscription to €27,99, while the annual subscription remains unchanged. Sony is clearly trying to force customers into long-term contracts by using financial pressure.

Besides the online multiplayer, the offer does indeed include monthly software bonuses Examples include "EA Sports FC 26" and "Wuchang: Fallen Feathers," but the real point of contention lies deeper. The company locks fundamental infrastructure features like online play behind a paywall for regularly purchased, full-price titles, while free-to-play titles completely circumvent these restrictions.

The end of brand loyalty

The reactions from our community reflect the statistical trend and reveal a deep sense of resignation. Many users emphasize in the comments section that this gradual increase was foreseeable and merely represents the beginning of a phased wave of price hikes designed to cushion public resistance.

The days when exclusive, large-scale projects like those from Team ICO or creative niche deals with studios like thatgamecompany justified buying a console are over. Instead, the prevailing feeling is one of being charged extra for an endless stream of remasters and formulaic mainstream fare.

The studio's statement regarding the price adjustment is accelerating a fundamental market trend. Numerous long-time console gamers are openly announcing in forums that they will permanently switch to PC and platforms like Steam after the PS5's lifespan, or cancel their subscriptions. The pain threshold is increasingly being reached.

First of all, it won't be any more expensive for those who already have PS+. I pay €72 annually, with free games every month. Sometimes they're rubbish, sometimes not, but calculated over the year, it's definitely worth it. There are always 3-5 top games included, and I don't need anything extra or premium to play PS1/2/3 or anything like that. I almost exclusively play GT anyway, and since GT7 came out, I haven't played GT Sport or GT6 anymore.

Because of a €1 increase? It only affects monthly and 3-month subscriptions. Annual subscriptions are not affected. I don't think that many people will switch to PC because of it.

Sebastian Gauer: Well, I have to have those extra €3 in my pocket somehow, because that's so much money, who can afford that anymore…

Vadim Groth, that's why I find it sad that one has to go into debt or collect deposit bottles because of it.
There are more important things in life than gaming 🙏

Sebastian Gauer: No, that's for the PSN credit, because it's so expensive and I can't afford €72 a year…
