It's undeniable that Sony continues to research VR technology until a market-ready successor to Playstation vr 2 However, it seems it will still take some time. Currently, though, trends are emerging that are moving away from bulky headsets and towards lightweight VR glasses.

Facebook is currently demonstrating this, albeit with the strict caveat that everything is still in an experimental phase. It could therefore be several years before the technology has been shrunk to the point where it all fits into a lightweight eyeglass frame.

However, a prototype will be presented later this year at the SIGGRAPH Conference, where the potential of such lightweight VR headsets will be highlighted. This prototype uses holographic optics and “polarization-based optical folding"This allows for a field of view comparable to today's VR headsets – in the case of PlayStation VR, that's about 100°. The ultimate goal is to create a headset that's less than 9mm thick. A video about this is available at [website address]." the Facebook Research Blog.

It can be assumed that Sony is also striving to build a significantly lighter VR headset, a factor considered one of the biggest barriers to entry in the VR world. A potential PlayStation VR 2 headset will likely be somewhat more discreet and lighter, though whether it will be as simple as a pair of glasses remains to be seen.

For the PS5, Sony is initially relying on the existing PlayStation VR headset, while a successor is not expected until well after the console's launch.
