KRAFTON Montréal Studio has partnered with Project Windless A new single-player open-world action RPG for the PlayStation 5 has been announced. The game is based on the popular Korean fantasy novel series. The Bird That Drinks Tears and promises to lead players into a world shaped by war and myth.
From novel to console: Myth meets action
Project Windless It puts the player in the role of a Rekon warrior traveling through a shattered land. According to the trailer, players will be able to "Fight against overwhelming opponents, forge alliances and wage massive battles to form a new kingdom.KRAFTON promises an open world full of “breathtaking landscapes“and a story deeply rooted in the original novel – whether the complexity of the books fits into an action RPG remains to be seen.
The trailer contains some dramatic lines of dialogue that emphasize the epic tone: “We are the children of the water, descended from the Goddess. You corrupt creatures… you dare to stand in the way of purity, little king?“Such passages are meant to convey the mythological depth, but could easily be lost in a fast-paced gameplay context.”
Open-world mechanics in focus
KRAFTON presents Project Windless as an open-world RPG with a focus on war, diplomacy, and exploration. Comparable titles include: Assassin's Creed or Elden RingThis shows that open worlds and epic battles are now standard. Innovation here is primarily sought through the setting and the literary source material. Whether the combat system and AI will live up to the high expectations is currently unclear – so far only trailer sequences exist, no playable demos.
The launch is currently only announced for the PS5. KRAFTON is using the presentation to establish the brand for the long term: A single-player strategy game based on well-known novels can appeal to the books' loyal fanbase while simultaneously gaining a broad player base – provided the implementation delivers on its visual and narrative promise.
