Sony is releasing the PS4 Slim today, Friday, marking the first comprehensive overhaul of the console since its launch in 2013. The latest version is available for €299 and promises the following changes.
Among the most significant innovations of the PS4 Slim is a slimmer and lighter design with a new look, making the console 30 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than its predecessor. Furthermore, the new PS4 is even more energy-efficient, with power consumption reduced by more than 34 percent and 28 percent, respectively, compared to the original and current models.
The new PS4 Slim retains the angled casing design of its predecessors. The shortened and rounded corners give the console a softer look, and the glossy PlayStation Family logo in the center of the top surface completes the stylish new design.
The only thing that has been removed is the optical connection on the back, which is something that those who are not yet using the sound via HDMI should take into account.
Who would benefit from the PS4 Slim?
In terms of performance, the PS4 Slim is on par with the previous model and therefore completely up-to-date. Anyone who doesn't plan to buy a 4K TV in the near future will be perfectly happy with the PS4 Slim and won't have to miss out on anything in terms of games.
However, the question remains whether it wouldn't be better to invest 100 EUR more and wait another two months to get double the performance with the PS4 Pro, which will also be worthwhile for players who don't use a 4K TV or HDR, but who will benefit from optimized performance.
The pre-order numbers speak for themselves, clearly favoring the PS4 Pro over the PS4 Slim. One selling point might be that the PS4 Slim already comes equipped with the new DualShock 4 controller and the 5GHz wireless adapter.
