Sony closes fiscal year 2025/26 with record operating profit in its gaming division. While PlayStation 5 hardware sales decline significantly, digital services and third-party providers salvage the result. A harbinger of where PlayStation is headed.

The PlayStation 5 Sony has definitively passed its peak. The company reports sales of 16 million units for fiscal year 2025, a decrease of 2,5 million compared to the previous year. The fourth quarter was particularly weak, with only 1,5 million consoles sold, even though the recent price increase only took effect then. The installed base now stands at 93,7 million units.

Digital services offset Bungie write-offs

The Game & Network Services segment generated an operating profit of 463,3 billion yen, a 12 percent increase year-over-year. This success is primarily attributable to increased revenue from the PlayStation Network and sales of third-party titles. Without these gains, the balance sheet would likely have looked much bleaker. The Bungie studio significantly impacted the results with write-downs of 120,1 billion yen.

The trend towards digital consumption continues to solidify. Of the 317,9 million software units sold, 78 percent were downloads. Monthly active users on the PlayStation Network rose slightly to 125 million accounts. Sony benefits here from a loyal user base that continues to invest in the ecosystem despite fewer hardware purchases.

Investing in the next generation

For the upcoming fiscal year 2026, Sony is forecasting a 6 percent decline in revenue. This is due to the expectation of further decreases in hardware sales. However, operating profit is expected to increase by 30 percent, as the massive one-time charges related to Bungie will no longer apply. At the same time, funds are being invested in the development of the successor platform – the PS6. So, it's not all stagnation.

Summary: Key takeaways about intuitive eating:

  • Release period: Fiscal year 2025 (ending March 31, 26).
  • Hardware sales: 16 million PS5 units (total: 93,7 million).
  • Software figures: 317,9 million units, of which 78% are digital.
  • Special effects: 120,1 billion yen write-down on Bungie.
  • Forecast FY2026: Focus on first-party releases and preparation for the next platform generation.

The PlayStation system now functions perfectly well without hardware hype, as long as users diligently pay their subscriptions and Bungie doesn't burn through even more money. It's a glimpse into the future, showing us that Sony is on its way to becoming a purely service-oriented company, where hardware is merely a cost factor.

I find this very remarkable and I'm delighted that people are investing in their passion despite the current political and resulting economic climate, to do something good for themselves. This aspect alone makes it clear that, in addition to its rock-solid hardware, performance, and game selection, the PS5 is simply something very special for gamers in times like these.

I hope that the future games lineup, such as GTAVI, will further boost hardware sales or demonstrate that a midgen refresh like the current PS5 Pro will continue to establish its relevance and added value.

I think they will surpass the good figures of the PS4 with the PS5; around 120 million could be possible with, for example, GTA VI, while the PS4 is at 117 million.
That's quite remarkable when you consider the worse global economic conditions and thus the significantly worse starting position since the PS5 release.

But it's interesting what a typical Playfront article this is again. It just can't be done without sensationalist comments and opinions.

"The PlayStation system now works even without hardware hype, as long as users dutifully pay their subscriptions and Bungie doesn't burn through even more money."

"Yes, that's still journalism, but a special form: opinion journalism or tabloid journalism. In professional circles, the line is drawn where journalistic craft rules (such as factual accuracy) are abandoned."

However, there are also often problems with factual accuracy.
