Sony is expanding the Welcome Hub as part of a PS5 beta with new widgets that, for the first time, display concrete player numbers and percentage popularity trends directly on the dashboard. This update addresses long-standing criticism of the console's isolated and sterile-looking user interface.

The PS5 receives via the Welcome Hub Access to two new data widgets: "Top 10 Most Played" and "Trending Now." While the former lists the most-played titles based on regional user data, including specific player numbers, the trending view displays percentage jumps in popularity. Sony is thus breaking with its previous strategy of hiding exact usage data behind vague terms like "Popular" and moving closer to the transparency of platforms like Steam.

A departure from UI minimalism

Since its launch in 2020, the PS5 interface has been criticized for being technically fast but emotionally detached. In direct comparison to the PS4, key social elements such as the "What's New" feed or visible community activity were missing. The console primarily functioned as a game launcher.

With the new widgets, Sony is trying to increase the platform's dynamism. The "Top 10" widget not only displays the usual most popular games, but also provides context for the community's size by showing the number of active players. This is a strategic shift: Sony is making data public that was previously only accessible internally or via third-party sites.

Dynamics through percentage trends

The "Trending Now" widget uses an algorithmic approach. It prioritizes games that experience massive increases in player numbers within a short period of time. This applies particularly to:

  • Indie titles that grow through viral effects or streamers.
  • Inventory after major content updates or DLC releases.
  • Revivals of older titles through sales or pop culture influences.

This transforms the dashboard into a source of information on trends, rather than simply a static library. Players can immediately see when a co-op title or a competitive shooter suddenly gains relevance, which should encourage collective engagement within the ecosystem.

Late insight in the hardware cycle

The introduction of these features comes at a time when the PS5 is already entering the later stages of its life cycle, marked by the launch of the PS5 Pro and initial discussions about its future. PS6The fact that these basic social functions are only being added now – over five years after the launch – highlights the flawed planning in the original UI concept.

This development suggests greater continuity for the future. It's unlikely that Sony will once again remove all social features for the next console generation, only to painstakingly rebuild them years later. The Welcome Hub is establishing itself as the true heart of the console, offering customization through widgets and backgrounds that simply didn't exist at launch.

For PS5 users, the update offers real added value when discovering games. Displaying specific player numbers creates transparency and helps users better assess the longevity of multiplayer titles before investing time or money. Sony is belatedly, but finally, recognizing that a modern console must be more than a sterile catalog – it must function as a social space.
