During today's PS5 presentation PlayStation architect Mark Cerny also addressed the topic of backward compatibility, which initially sounds a bit sobering. It seems that not all PS4 games will work across the board, but will be added gradually.
Rather, the discussion centers on the top 100 PS4 games that will be backward compatible at the PS5 launch. The developers themselves are quite enthusiastic about this, as the topic is quite complex.
“Running PS4 titles at increased frequencies has also increased the complexity. The boost this time around is truly massive, and some game code can't handle it. Testing has to be done title by title. However, the results are excellent. We recently looked at the top 100 PlayStation 4 titles ranked by playtime, and we expect almost all of them to be playable on PlayStation 5 at launch.”
Which titles these will be is not yet being discussed. However, it is ultimately guaranteed that once backward compatibility is implemented in the PS5, it will remain and will not be lost or removed due to potential cost savings in a new version, as was the case with the PS3.
