The transition from the current generation to the next generation, centered around the PS5 and Xbox Series X, will likely happen faster than previously expected. This is evident from comments by various developers who are fed up with the underpowered hardware of the PS4 and Xbox One.

That said John Linneman of Digital Foundry after discussions with various developers, according to which there is a “difficult process“This is necessary to somehow accommodate next-generation games on the current generation. The AMD Jaguar architecture of the current hardware is simply too outdated and therefore too resource-intensive.”

"Nobody wants to develop for an underpowered Jaguar CPU anymore. I've spoken to enough developers to know how painful the process is at this point. Leave the Xbox One and PS4 behind."

Linnemann compares this using the following examples: Super Mario 64...for which there were good reasons not to release it on the SNES. Ultimately, that was a great thing and should be considered again in the future. The idea that the omission of last-gen versions is some kind of anti-consumer mentality is, in his opinion, completely absurd.

Former programmers at DICE share this view, stating that optimizing last-gen versions is a significant undertaking and only limits the capabilities of the new hardware. Sony concurs, though unlike Microsoft, they are more focused on their future console and have clearly stated that certain games will only be available for PS5.

The situation is different for games developed for PS4 and Xbox One and then ported to the PS5 or XSX. This process has never been easier and is therefore frequently used.
