Sony is currently hinting at which target group it specifically wants to reach with the PlayStation 5, even though PlayStation is generally considered a family-friendly console.
In an interview Sony's Chief Executive, Kenichiro Yoshida, said that the PS5's focus is clearly on “Hardcore gamers and AAA titles” is being directed. The latter is becoming increasingly important, so the greatest efforts are to be invested in this area. At the same time, this could also mean that the indie wave for the PS4 will subside somewhat.
The best and newest
Sony's hope with the PS5 is that it will appeal to consumers who are looking for the latest and greatest, thus clearly differentiating itself from the competition. To achieve this, its own first-party studios are expected to deliver even more big-budget games.
Regarding the competition, aside from the Xbox One, Nintendo isn't really seen as a rival, as they've always catered to their own specific target audiences. They're also taking a relaxed approach to the Google Stadia streaming service, waiting to see how it develops. Only when streaming becomes truly established in the gaming industry do they believe Stadia could pose a threat.
The PS5 is expected to launch towards the end of 2020.
