Sony will apparently rework the invite feature on the PS5 or PS4, as a recent patent reveals. The game in question will be started in the background, possibly to allow the current session to be ended.

Currently, you can invite any player, who then has to end their current game and join the new one. If the current patent is implemented, invitations will be accepted and initially run in the background. A picture-in-picture function is also mentioned.

The patent states the following:

"Systems and procedures for setting up a multiplayer game session are provided. A procedure may include selecting at least one invited computer device from a plurality of invited computer devices to participate in the multiplayer game session and selecting a game from a list of games for the multiplayer game session. The procedure may include transmitting an invitation to participate in the multiplayer game session to the invited participant's at least one computer device and causing the invited participant's at least one computer device to start the game." in a background process to start with one or more applications running in the foreground on the invited participant.”

Speculating a little further, the PS5 will be able to run multiple applications simultaneously, including multiple games. There have already been reports suggesting that this might be possible.

As is often the case with patents, nothing is official or confirmed yet, so we have to wait for further information from Sony.
