This weekend, some users received their PS5 Pro consoles early, which, in addition to the final specifications and a Teardown Testing the Boost Mode, which is primarily intended to benefit older PS4 games. A comparison image from "Bloodborne“ – a classic from FromSoftware – shows the differences between a conventional PS5 and the new PS5 Pro version with the optimization option enabled.

PS4 Boost Mode on the PS5 Pro has not been convincing so far.

The results shown have left the gaming community rather disappointed. At first glance, Sony seems to have made only minimal adjustments with the PS5 Pro. The game's resolution remains unchanged, and only the sharpness appears slightly increased – noticeable primarily in text and the user interface, if at all. Even this "sharpness boost," however, is barely perceptible, and many users report having to look very closely to notice a difference. These initial impressions suggest that one has to believe in the promised improvements rather than actually seeing them. An interactive comparison is available. with this link.

These initial impressions reignite the debate about whether the mid-gen refresh is justified at this price. Has Sony delivered a genuine upgrade with the PS5 Pro, or is it more of a cosmetic update? The lack of marketing for this "enhanced feature" suggests that Sony itself doesn't expect a significant advantage. If the differences are so marginal, the PS5 Pro's target audience could be disappointed—especially if they were expecting a noticeable performance boost. However, the performance boost isn't the primary reason to buy the PS5 Pro.

Just the beginning

And of course, this is just the beginning, and a comprehensive evaluation of the console will only be possible once it's officially on the market and users can test the full range of its features. It remains to be seen whether Sony will release further details that highlight the added value of the PS5 Pro in this regard.

Why buy a PS5 Pro if you're just going to play PS4 games on it... lol
Perhaps they should test PS4 Pro enhanced games instead of Bloodborne...

FPS boost for unpatched games, price €600
And maybe I'll think about it, but as Hans says, whether the blade of grass looks better in the background doesn't bother me, I'm not going to spend €800 on it.

I'm really disappointed with Sony, but honestly, what did you expect? That the games would run better on their own just because it's a PS5 Pro? Of course, every game needs an update first. The resolution won't magically improve... or the frame rate will increase...

Ultimately, most people just want to play the latest hyped games anyway; now it just says PS5 Pro Enhanced on it, and you get 10fps more, a couple of tufts of grass, and a slightly higher resolution, and bam, for many, that's the justification for the console.

Check out PS3 games like Mad Max or Shadow of Mordor on PC in native 4K with max details. They're practically remastered games on par with PS5 games, automatically. I recently played Metal Gear 5 for PC, and it looks absolutely amazing. Seriously, it was practically a next-gen experience. I've bought several games twice now; a Resident Evil 4 remake on PC looks like it's meant for the PS6 or even the PS6 Pro.

What I'm getting at is,
Sony needs to deliver games; graphics and technology alone won't be enough, the gap to PC gaming is far too large. They need awesome exclusives; Sony still has a good reputation thanks to games like Bloodborne. And remember, 30fps is 30fps, don't be fooled by pseudo-marketing nonsense, always remember the fairy tale of the Emperor's New Clothes 😉
