The continued success of the PlayStation 4 could mean that players will have to wait even longer for the next generation of consoles, the PS5. At least, that's the assessment of analysts at IDC.

With the PS4 Pro, Sony may have significantly extended the current cycle, meaning that, according to their own assessment, the next generation is not expected before 2021. The same applies to the next Xbox console, according to Lewis Ward, IDC Research Director for Gaming and VR/AR.

“Currently, I think the PS5 and next-gen Xbox will be released in 2021, but that is just a preliminary placeholder in my prediction,” so Ward.

The PS4 also has incredible potential for further growth, potentially reaching the 100 million unit sales mark in 2019. Given the recently reached 70,6 million units is a perfectly realistic goal, making this spectacular milestone increasingly attainable, perhaps even before 2019.
