PS5: Sony unveils the user experience & user interface

By

Sony has unveiled the user experience and user interface of the PlayStation 5, providing a closer look at new features such as the Control Center and the Activities function.

The Control Center is one of the new highlights, offering instant access to almost everything players need from the system. It's activated with a single press of the PlayStation button on the DualSense wireless controller, without having to leave the game.

Also new is the Activities feature. Activities are displayed as virtual cards in the Control Center and quickly guide players to various elements within the game. With their help, players can discover new gameplay options, quickly jump to elements they missed, directly access different levels, or start challenges. Some of the Activity cards can be activated in picture-in-picture mode, so players don't have to interrupt the game to view them.

PS5 UI

Navigating the user interface, switching between different games, and joining online matches now takes only a few moments thanks to the completely redesigned user experience. Sony describes the PlayStation 5 as offering a next-generation user experience.

Auf dem PlayStation Blog Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Planning & Management at Sony Interactive Entertainment, further describes the background of the new user experience.

"Players' playtime is valuable and should be significant. The less time users spend interacting with the system, the longer they can play. All new features were inspired by this vision. They are designed to make the gaming experience even more fun, enjoyable, personalized, and social."

PlayStation Plus users also benefit from an offline help function, which works via a context-based streaming solution that utilizes features such as picture-in-picture. It was also mentioned that the UI is rendered in native 4K, as are video and screenshot captures, including spoiler warnings. Furthermore, there is no waiting time when accessing the PlayStation Store, which this time appears to be integrated directly into the console. This and more is discussed in the video below.
