Somewhat surprisingly, Sony has released a new firmware update for its Bravia TVs, which adds promised PS5 features. However, it seems not all owners will be able to benefit from it yet.
The first models to be rolled out at VRR are the X85J, X86J, and X89J series, the 2021 LED models. The premium XR series models, which include the Bravia OLED TVs, will likely have to wait a little longer, as will the 2020 Bravia TVs.
However, this feature will likely not be usable for the time being, as the corresponding firmware update for the PS5 is still missing. This update is expected no later than January.
Perfect for PS5 features
It seems that one can achieve this with the promised PS5 features They are somewhat faster than expected, having originally planned to be delivered by the end of January 2022. These are almost exclusively reserved for the newest models.
The Z9J, A90J, A80/83/84J, X95J and X90J models were specifically designed for the best possible collaboration with the PlayStation 5 to ensure a fantastic gaming experience with impressive picture and sound.
Exclusive features include Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode, a 'best practice' method developed by Sony and Microsoft to deliver the best possible HDR image.
“We are excited to offer our customers new features in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment to enhance their gaming experience,” said Tyler Ishida, Vice President of Consumer Business Group, Sony Electronics Inc. “With superior picture quality, low input lag, and the addition of Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode, we can confidently say that BRAVIA XR TVs are ‘Perfect for PlayStation 5’.”

Auto HDR Tone Mapping & Co.
With Auto HDR Tone Mapping, the HDR settings are optimized immediately during the initial PS5 setup. The PS5 automatically detects individual BRAVIA XR TV models and then selects the best HDR setting for the television.

This allows you to see important details and colors even in high-contrast scenes, such as... Gran Turismo 7 demonstrates where detailed objects along the route remain recognizable, thus enabling better planning of one's next steps.
With Auto Genre Picture Mode, Bravia TVs can detect whether a user is playing a game or watching movies and shows. When playing games, the TV automatically switches to Game Mode, which minimizes input lag and makes the action more responsive. When watching movies via a streaming service or from an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc on the PS5, it switches to Standard Mode, which focuses on image processing to deliver a more expressive picture.
UpdateThe firmware update also fixed numerous bugs based on user feedback, including the correct BT.2020 color space for YouTube.
It's simply ridiculous what Sony is doing. I have a Samsung with HDMI 2.1, VRR, etc., and a PS5 since release. My TV is underutilized...
There's the "eunuch" again... xD
