Sony has the official PS5 FAQ It updates and confirms that the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) feature will only be delivered with a future update.
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is a feature specifically promoted for the HDMI 2.1 standard and is particularly interesting for gamers. Variable Refresh Rate dynamically adjusts the TV's refresh rate, thus preventing tearing effects, for example.
The official FAQ now states:
"PS5 hardware supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) over HDMI 2.1. After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR function of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR."
Overall, this is another area where Sony disappoints at the PS5 launch, especially for those who already own compatible hardware. Microsoft deserves praise here, having delivered exactly what was promised with the Xbox Series X and HDMI 2.1.
Other HDMI 2.1 features are also currently missing on the PS5, including ALLM and the full bandwidth, which is currently limited to 32GB/s. This already reveals initial disadvantages for those who want to play games at high performance levels.
