Users are patiently waiting for the final VRR update for the PlayStation 5, which Sony promised almost two years ago when the console was announced.

today's presentation of the new Sony Bravia XR TV models While they emphasize the imminent availability, they still haven't given a specific date. Most recently, they expected it to be available by the end of this month at the latest.

The only certainty at this point seems to be that the update can be expected by spring 2022 at the latest. According to Sony, the new Sony Bravia A90K will immediately support the VRR feature. At the same time, it should also be available for PlayStation 5 and, ideally, for TVs back in 2019.

First devices half supplied

Sony has already released the first devices in its own Bravia series. equipped with a VRR updateHowever, it was also pointed out that a further update will be necessary for full compatibility. The first models to receive the update were the X85J, X86J, and X89J series, the 2021 LED models. As mentioned, the premium 2021 XR series models, which also include the OLED series of Bravia TVs, will have to wait a little longer. The same applies to the 2020 Bravia TVs.

Auto HDR Tone Mapping & Picture Mode

Sony's latest TVs also support Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Picture Mode, as was highlighted again in today's presentation. With Auto HDR Tone Mapping, the HDR settings are immediately optimized during the initial PS5 setup, and the console automatically detects individual BRAVIA XR TV models and then selects the best HDR setting for the television. However, initial tests revealed... sobering results, with the advice to adjust the settings manually.

Auto Genre Picture Mode, on the other hand, detects whether the user is playing a game or watching movies and shows. With Auto Genre Picture Mode, the TV automatically switches to Game Mode when playing games, which minimizes input lag and makes the action more responsive, or to Standard Mode when watching movies via a streaming service or from an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc on the PS5, which shifts the focus to image processing for a more expressive picture.

While things are finally starting to move forward, it feels like it's happening far too late or that the promises are too long in the future. The fact that they still haven't delivered the best and most perfect picture as promised leaves one all the more disappointed.

All I need is a downscale from internal 4K to native 2K at the output for compatible monitors. This FullHD upscaling is a real plague that needs to be fixed ASAP, Sony!!!
