PS6 and AMD: Evolution instead of revolution

According to Kepler, AMD plans to keep RDNA 3.5 on the market longer than expected. RDNA 5 is reportedly intended to be reserved initially for "premium APUs"—expensive chips for high-end handhelds costing well over $1.000. For the PS6, this likely means that a traditional console SoC with a completely new GPU architecture is unlikely in the short term.

Both sources suggest that Sony doesn't want to take any risks with immature architectures.

  • Pro: The PS6 could be technically balanced, efficient, and developer-friendly. A clear separation between handheld and console strategies seems sensible.
  • cons: Anyone hoping for a major graphical overhaul will likely be disappointed. Without a full implementation of RDNA 5, the improvement will be limited.

In the end, the PS6 might be less visionary but more predictable. Major graphical leaps aren't expected in video games anymore anyway. Instead, the focus will be on detail and immersion. This isn't a disadvantage for gamers, as long as Sony balances performance, price, and timing effectively.

The handheld will certainly not be an iteration of the PS6, but will perhaps stand on its own, like the PS Vita. A game is already being offered and adapted for multiple platforms, so this adaptation will simply be added.
My thought is, I don't think it will be called "PS6 (handheld name)" but something without "6" in the name, something like PS VITA 2.

As much as I'm excited about Sony's native handheld, their strategy for the home console makes no sense. The handheld barely reaches PS5 base graphics, maybe with 20% more performance. Will that then be the main platform for game development, with the PS6 home console being something like the Pro model? That means we won't see any significant graphical leap anyway. And what will happen when game X/Y is released on the handheld but not on the PS5/Pro, even though the difference is negligible and the PS5 could easily handle it? This strategy doesn't make sense; it can only work if developers are willing to optimize their games for the handheld. Simply scaling down won't be possible, even with AI. It's always easier to scale up a well-optimized handheld game than a well-optimized console game on a handheld, which is limited by its power consumption alone. This approach won't allow them to optimally serve either target group like Nintendo does. In that case, even from this perspective, a portal concept is better.

Xbox Next 68 CU? And the PS6 is supposed to have only 52 CU according to the leaker?

Hopefully not. Hopefully the value will be increased, otherwise the new Xbox will be worlds more powerful.

In reality, games are developed for handhelds and then upscaled for the PS6 home console, and the developers will complain that the handheld doesn't have enough power.
