Rumors surrounding the PS6 suggest a 2028 release for $1.000. The reason given is high storage costs. All the details on the report!

A new insider report predicts the PS6 will launch in late 2028 with a potential retail price of at least $1.000. The ongoing price volatility in the global markets for memory chips and semiconductor components is reportedly forcing Sony to make this drastic change in strategy.

The 2028 Report: Causes of the Presumed Delay

The well-known industry insider Nash Weedle The report puts the year 2028 in the running – a year later than most previous market forecasts had predicted for the generational shift. The main reason cited is the exploding procurement costs for DRAM and NAND flash memory. To meet the usual performance leap expectations of a new console generation, Sony traditionally uses high-end components. These are currently so expensive on the global market that a 2027 release would completely wipe out the hardware margin. Sony would have to lose a significant amount of money on each unit sold.

The logic behind waiting out the crisis is flawed, however. Current economic forecasts for the semiconductor industry show no easing of the situation in 2027, but rather an intensification of the shortage. At best, prices are expected to stabilize at a high level in 2028. A sudden price drop for hardware components is unrealistic. Current production costs are the new normal.

Logistical headwinds: Why console launches are rigid constructs

The fundamental inertia of supply chains argues against a short-term postponement of the PS6 launch. Contracts with chip supplier AMD for the production of custom APUs are finalized years in advance. Wafer capacity at foundries like TSMC must be booked and paid for long-term.

A console launch can't be postponed like a software title with a patch. Once the contracts for 2027 are in place, production starts. An artificial halt ties up storage capacity and wastes capital. The risk of hardware leaks increases with every month that finished silicon chips sit in warehouses.

Furthermore, a hardware delay inevitably leads to a chain reaction in software development. PlayStation Studios develops its next-gen projects precisely for the launch window. If these games are delayed, Sony loses revenue. If they are released for the older PS5 hardware, it hinders technological progress. A dilemma.

The subsidy model

If the $1.000 price point for the home console PS6 proves accurate, Sony will have to radically restructure its ecosystem. The report identifies two key levers: the introduction of a cheaper handheld companion# and the final elimination of physical media. A handheld for $400 to $500 could serve as a cheaper gateway drug to retain the player base on the PlayStation network.

The removal of an optical drive from the main console not only saves on direct manufacturing costs, but also completely eliminates traditional retail channels as intermediaries. Every game purchase thus goes 100% through the PlayStation Store, maximizing the digital profit margin per title. This, along with further price increases for PS Plus, is intended to offset the loss of the expensive hardware. Ultimately, the player pays either way.

The rumors clearly demonstrate one thing: the classic €500 console cycle is dead. Four-figure sums for graphics cards are commonplace for PC gamers, and console gamers will likely have to prepare for similar costs with the PS6. Anyone wanting next-gen consoles at launch shouldn't put off saving. There's still plenty of time until 2028.

The question is, who will still buy this stuff if Sony continues with its current strategy?

Sorry guys, the PS6 isn't coming out until 2030, so you can count on Sony having their hands out of everything to squeeze every last penny out of you 😉😜😂😂

Daniel Gernhardt, if you're going to say something, then say it properly; only those people who are into digital games buy the PS6, and the rest do without.
The PlayStation 6 is expected to launch between late 2027 and 2029. According to current reports, industry insiders and leakers predominantly anticipate a release in 2027 or 2028. However, some market analysts expect a later launch around 2029 due to the strong sales figures of the PS5.

$1000 for a primitive plastic box without a drive; this corporation's greed is truly boundless.

I might as well just buy a PC.

Sony is shooting itself in the foot if it stops manufacturing game discs.

Then I'll switch back to PC when the PS5 Pro is no longer supported later on.

Then I'd rather stick with the PC – if only because of the disk issue.
I've played PlayStation for the past few years, but I don't like Sony. I wouldn't be willing to pay €1000, and certainly not if there are no CDs.
