According to current assessments, the upcoming PS6 will not be slowed down in its performance by an accompanying handheld system, as the difference in RAM between the home console and the mobile device is expected to be less than 30 percent.

While the home console is expected to have 32 GB of RAM, the handheld model will be equipped with 24 GB. According to industry expert Moore's Law is Dead, this relatively small difference is intended to ensure that developers don't have to make massive compromises in game design, as is currently the case with the Xbox Series S.

RAM architecture as a lesson learned from the Xbox problem

The current console generation suffers from the significant gap between the Xbox Series X (16 GB) and Series S (10 GB). This 60 percent difference forced studios like Larian to cut features or postpone releases, as there wasn't enough storage space for complex calculations and textures. Sony seems to be addressing this issue with the PS6 to avoid.

With a difference of less than 30 percent, the adjustments primarily focus on resolution and texture quality. Since the handheld operates on a smaller screen, lower resolutions automatically consume less memory. The core mechanics, AI calculations, and physics engine can therefore remain identical on both systems, without the weaker device becoming the lowest common denominator for game design.

Automation through AI scaling

Additional reports suggest that Sony is increasingly relying on automated systems to downscale textures for the handheld. Combined with PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), this could efficiently compensate for the handheld's smaller amount of RAM. The goal is an architecture where the handheld simply functions as a "720p or 1080p version" of the PS6, rather than requiring a technically scaled-down version of the game.

According to current assessments, the PS6 will not be limited in its capabilities by a "light" model. Developers can fully utilize the PS6's architecture, while the handheld remains future-proof thanks to its generous 24 GB of RAM, which even surpasses the memory of the current PS5. The focus is shifting from technical limitations to pure scalability of image quality.

The way it's written here is as if the PS6 and handheld were already officially announced at some point, or as if it was ever officially discussed somewhere.
Even the headline suggests that it's about something official that has already been announced.
The only official confirmation is that work is underway on a PS6.

So an 8GB difference is supposed to be less than a 6GB difference? Sure.
Even if the memory is faster, it's still an 8GB physical difference. This might not make a difference for Sony's own games, since the PS5 will still be the main platform anyway, but studios coming from the PC sector will complain. I also don't understand why they want to claim to have the more powerful console, since they probably won't achieve it anyway. The PS1 and PS2 were inferior to the competition in some respects, and yet they still programmed better games with beautiful art styles. Should they standardize it, either 24 or 32GB? I think 24GB is too little for a handheld anyway; by the time the handheld is released, there will be handhelds with more than that. There are even Lenovo Legion Go 2s now, and you can already buy Red Magic Pro smartphones with 24GB of RAM.

The first PlayStation was inferior to the competition? What competition? The Nintendo 64 or what? Are you high? The first PlayStation generations were unrivaled and, apart from PC specs, inferior to nothing.
