ZeniMax Media filed a new trademark application for "Quake" on March 3, 2026. While the industry is hoping for a modern single-player reboot in the style of DOOM (2016), the facts remain typically dry. Initially, it's simply a legal protection of the brand for software and digital content.
The registration, which was first made by user Timur222 on X entdeckt The list includes classic categories such as "computer game software" and "digital publications." Such entries can be purely routine. Trademark protection must be renewed regularly to maintain the rights to it.
However, the timing coincides with the franchise's 30th anniversary. The first Quake version was released in 1996 and defined the 3D shooter genre. ZeniMax's move to mark this milestone anniversary suggests more than just record-keeping.
Movement at Microsoft Game Studios
The context within the parent company fuels further skepticism. Microsoft Gaming is in a transitional phase. Asha Sharma recently took over leadership from Phil Spencer. While Sharma has already teased the next console generation with "Project Helix," which is also intended to natively support PC games, the entire Xbox Game Studios portfolio is under review.
Whether a new Quake project – should it exist – will survive the current strategy review or has already fallen victim to prioritization cannot be determined from the document. id Software itself is officially involved with the DLC for DOOM: The Dark Ages fully occupied.
In recent years, Quake has only been kept relevant on modern systems through technically sound remasters of the first two installments and RTX patches. A true comeback of the Strogg or Lovecraftian aesthetic based on idTech 8, known from the upcoming DOOM title, is the desired scenario for many players, but remains unconfirmed at this time.
