Rocksteady, the studio behind the acclaimed Batman: Arkham-series, is reportedly working on a single-player Batman game again. According to a report from Bloomberg the studio is set to return to its roots after the commercial and critical flop of "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League". However, the new project is likely to take years to complete.
A comeback after a failure?
After "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League" was not well received by critics or gamers and Warner Bros. a loss of around 200 million dollars Rocksteady seems to be rethinking its strategy. The game, which was conceived as a live-service title, failed to meet the high expectations and became a symbol of what fans did not want from the studio.
But now the tide could be turning. According to Bloomberg, Rocksteady wants to create another single-player experience based around the Dark Knight. Although the project is still at an early stage, it could be a much-needed shot in the arm for the studio.
Rocksteady in crisis
The last few months have been anything but rosy for the London studio. Following the flop of "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League", there were massive redundancies. According to reports, the QA department was drastically downsized and other teams were not spared either. There had already been job cuts last year, which reinforces the impression that Warner Bros. is not satisfied with Rocksteady's performance.
If the reports turn out to be true, Rocksteady could get back on the road to success with a new Batman game. The Arkham-trilogy set the standard for superhero games, and many fans want a return to the classic single-player experience. But it will be a long time before that happens - and Warner Bros. will certainly be keeping a close eye on whether Rocksteady makes the right decision this time.
