The former GTA competitor has already evolved into Saints Row: The Third, a game that goes its own way.
Instead of engaging in a hopeless battle against the genre leader, a completely new concept was developed here, one that has already proven successful in the sandbox genre. And this approach is being relentlessly pursued with Saints Row IV, as, according to Game Design Director Scott Phillips, such an absurd game is currently lacking.
They've completely abandoned all logic; they take the role of the US president – the leader of the free world – and give him superpowers. He can jump higher than a skyscraper, run faster than a rocket sled, fire an ice cannon, and things like that. It's simple. "absurd", Phillips explains.
"When you think about it, the job of a politician isn't really that exciting. It seems like the right level of absurdity for our game. You can grab a tank and throw it, which makes it difficult to create human opponents that you can meaningfully fight."
According to Phillips, Saints Row IV is a type of game whose enjoyment is still owed to the players.
Saints Row IV will be released on August 20, 2013.
