The first post-launch update, version 1.004, for "Saros" specifically addresses performance issues and adjusts the effectiveness of certain equipment. Housemarque is responding to community feedback just one week after release to stabilize the gameplay of the roguelike shooter.
While visual improvements to the cutscenes provide more immersion, the gameplay focuses primarily on the balance of the artifacts.
Focus on gameplay precision
The developers are directly addressing the core gameplay. The most noticeable change is the correction to projectile ricochets. In a fast-paced roguelike where every shot counts, imprecise physics are fatal for a run. The improved ricochet accuracy makes combat in confined spaces more predictable. At the same time, the "Power Generator" trait has been nerfed. The reduced energy generation suggests that players were previously able to circumvent the challenge too easily with this mechanic. Balancing is key here.
In addition to gameplay adjustments, visual readability has been improved. The new update adds preview images for color settings and optimizes the armor integrity display. In the heat of battle, these are crucial details. With the armor corruption HUD now color-matched, cognitive load during boss fights is reduced. Reflections have also been optimized, which should result in a more stable frame rate, especially on the PS5, during scenes with heavy visual effects.
The 5 most important new features:
- Weapon nerf: The energy output from the power generator was noticeably reduced.
- Artifact buff: The Powered Dash now scales with damage and has received new visual effects.
- Gameplay fix: The accuracy of projectile ricochets has been optimized for higher precision.
- Technical update: Optimized reflections and improved cinematics (Prolog & Eclipse Device).
- UI improvement: New color categories and improved readability of the armor display in the HUD.
A must-see for returning visitors
This patch for “saros“This isn't a content update, but pure maintenance of the mechanics. Anyone familiar with Returnal knows that Housemarque polishes their games for months before releasing major expansions. The fact that they've already tweaked the scaling of the "Powered Dash" artifact shows that the studio is closely analyzing telemetry data. Anyone who was frustrated by minor collision errors in the biomes should now give it another try. According to the patch notes, the geometry errors have been largely fixed.”
The update is necessary and solid overall, but nothing to get excited about. It smooths out the rough edges of an already strong launch title. The real innovations are yet to come.
