Ubisoft launches season 2 'Oaths of War' of Skull and Bones with capital ships, faction warfare and an almost impregnable fortress.

Ubisoft has released the second season of Year 2 content for Skull and Bones Published. Titled "Oaths of War," it focuses on the open war between the DMC and the Compagnie Royale – a conflict charged with heavier equipment, larger fortresses, and more decision-making power for the players.

But what does that mean specifically for the community? And can Season 2 deliver on its promise of tactical depth and variety?

Lots of firepower, little surprise?

The new flagship of the season is the frigate, the first capital ship in the game. With up to 34 gun ports, two auxiliary stations, and the "Courage" perk, it aims to become the dominant force at sea. In terms of sheer numbers, the ship offers clear advantages, but how much this translates into actual gameplay remains to be seen. Without balance adjustments, the frigate risks becoming the dominant meta – and could thus restrict rather than promote diversity on the ocean.

At the same time, Ubisoft promises more team play with the introduction of Wolvenhol, a new mega-fortress that can only be conquered collectively. It's packed with defensive lines, minibosses, and rare materials. According to Ubisoft, the focus here is on cooperative progression – a sensible move for a game that has often suffered from too much solo grinding.

Later in the season, the "Faction War" feature will be introduced. Players will then be able to actively take sides and gather resources through invasions to strengthen their own faction or betray it at the last moment. This sounds exciting, but it raises questions about how much such decisions will affect gameplay progress. And will it create real dynamism or be more of a cosmetic competition? Concrete information on this is currently lacking, because according to... Ubisoft This is an "upcoming" feature.

Small improvements with a big impact

In addition to the major features, Ubisoft has also tweaked the core gameplay. The revamped wind and sail mechanics make navigation noticeably more responsive. Furthermore, equipment sets can now be saved and quickly equipped – a convenient feature that saves real time in daily play.

The current Smuggler's Pass offers the usual rewards: new weapons, armor, cosmetics – nothing fundamentally new as far as we know. Players hoping for substantial progression will likely be more interested in the faction wars and the new stronghold.

Oaths of War A year after its release, it feels like another step in the right direction, with more freedom of choice, a focus on team play, and an improved game foundation. Whether that's enough to Skull and Bones Whether the game can emerge from the shadow of its mixed launch in the long term remains to be seen. At least those who are currently playing are getting more than just cosmetic token content.

What do you think – has Ubisoft turned things around this season?
