Sony and Panasonic have set themselves the goal of launching a successor to the Blu-ray Disc by 2015, which will have significantly more storage capacity.

Given the ever-increasing volume of data, especially that the 4K era will bring, current capacities of 100GB will likely no longer suffice. Whether the new format will actually reach end users, however, remains to be seen, as its initial focus is on professional applications, primarily to ensure long-term data archiving. In particular, the resistance to external influences continues to favor optical media in this regard.

The next goal is to define the specifications for the new medium, which should also be compatible to a certain extent with other generations and thus continue to be readable. However, new approaches are also needed for the future, primarily to be able to store more data on it.
