To avoid completely running aground at the generational change, most major titles like Battlefield, Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed are released for both the current generation and for PS4 and Xbox One.
But is cross-play between generations possible? According to Sony World Wide Studio boss Shuhei Yoshida, that depends on the specific title. The decision ultimately rests with the publisher, not Sony alone.
@MrClutch1994 it's up to title, you need to ask the publishers

This statement at least suggests that it's technically possible to play against each other across two generations. Since things like matchmaking will be handled server-side in the future, matches between PlayStation and Xbox might even be conceivable. The only question is whether this will ever happen.
