The light bar of the DualShock 4 controller was one of the most hotly debated topics surrounding the PlayStation 4, the true function of which was concealed for months.
As Jed Ashforth, Senior Designer at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, now betrayedThe lightbar's true origin lies in the development of the VR headset 'Project Morpheus', which is required for tracking. Therefore, the suggestion for this feature also came from their department.
When the first complaints arose at the launch of the PlayStation 4 that the light bar reflected in the TV screen and was therefore seen as a disadvantage, the organizers said to themselves... "Oh no", but the true meaning could not be revealed either.
Sony had presented the light bar as a distinguishing feature for the player and to create a mood lighting effect in the room. The latter has not really proven successful to this day.
