Following Activision and Nintendo, Sony is also skipping this year's gamescom, the Japanese company announced today. This means the event is losing one of its most important exhibitors.
The cancellation isn't really surprising, as Sony has been avoiding large events for some time now. On the one hand, they cite cost factors, and on the other hand, they consider such a concentrated event unsuitable for introducing new products.
The unique aspect of gamescom, however, is that it's a regular trade fair open to the public, allowing users to try out the products beforehand. Sony had previously reserved half a hall for this purpose. There's a small chance that Sony will showcase something at the gamescom Opening Night or plan another State of Play event soon.
gamescom without PSVR2
This means that neither the PS5, nor PlayStation VR2, nor upcoming games like God of War Ragnarok Sony will be able to see or try out the VR2 themselves in Cologne. This would be particularly important for PlayStation VR2, in order to convince users of the experience.
The full list of exhibitors for gamescom remains unknown. No official list has been released yet. Gamescom has only mentioned over 250 participants, including Bandai Namco, THQ Nordic, and Koch Media, who have already indicated their attendance.
For those who would like to visit gamescom even without Sony, the tickets for the event It can be ordered immediately. According to official information, it has already gotten off to a good start, but due to security measures, it is also more limited and significantly more expensive this year than in 2019.
