Quite surprisingly, Sony announced yesterday, Wednesday. a new firmware update released for their Bravia TVs, with which one can the 'Perfect for PS5'Settings enabled.
According to a "best practice" approach, users of compatible Sony Bravia TVs should no longer need to worry about the best HDR settings, as the PS5 automatically detects the TV model and determines the optimal settings accordingly. However, this approach not only goes far beyond what is intended but actually delivers a rather detrimental result, as initial tests have revealed.

These attitudes are total nonsense.
In a detailed video The experts at HDTV Test show that the PS5's automatic presets are complete nonsense and don't reflect the TV's capabilities at all. As a result, the picture quality suffers considerably.
As an example, in the first Adjust HDR screen, the PS5 sets a preset that corresponds to around 2.700 nits, which, according to HDTV Test, is sufficient for an OLED device. "Completely crazy" The same applies to the second and third Adjust HDR screens; while not quite as dramatic, the results are still distorted in color and settings. Therefore, anyone relying on the automatic presets will end up with anything but the perfect picture from their PS5.
HDTV Test therefore strongly recommends continuing to adjust the HDR settings manually to achieve a truly great picture – without overexposure, washouts, or loss of color depth. For the new Bravia OLED series A80 and A90, the following procedure is recommended:
- New Bravia TV Firmware V6.4284 to install
- Turn off HDR tone mapping on the TV
- Adjust HDR on the PS5:
- first screen 15x high
- second screen 15x high
- third screen 1x down
- Set HDR tone mapping on the TV back to Grandation.

The problem here isn't so much the TV, but the PS5, which apparently isn't cooperating properly. It's expected that Sony will address this issue. Perhaps PlayStation itself was surprised by the firmware update for the TVs, which was originally planned for release by the end of January 2022.
The update for Bravia TVs also includes other features for the PS5, such as the Auto Genre picture mode, which automatically detects whether the user is playing a game or watching movies and shows. The first LED models from 2021 also now support VRR, although the PS5 itself still lacks this capability.
Where can I deactivate the HDR tone mapping function on the Sony A90j TV? Or can I simply adjust the HDR manually on the PS5 and turn off the automatic setting?
