Following the groundbreaking success of the co-op adventure “Split FictionA film adaptation from Hazelight Studios and EA has now been officially announced. While the cast and director are still unknown, this film could turn out to be one of the most exciting video game-to-film projects of recent years.
From the couch to the cinema screen
Hazelight Studios, under the leadership of Josef Fares, has made a name for itself in the gaming industry. With an uncompromising vision and a penchant for story-driven couch co-op games, the studio created some of the best cooperative gaming experiences with titles like "A Way Out," "It Takes Two," and "Split Fiction." Hazelight resisted the trend toward microtransactions and subscription models, instead opting for a simple yet effective strategy: pay once, play together. The "Friend Pass," in particular, which allows players to share the game with a friend without them having to purchase it, was celebrated by fans.
The success of "Split Fiction" did not go unnoticed in Hollywood. According to Variety The production company Story Kitchen is working on a film adaptation and is currently pitching the project to various studios. Concrete information regarding the script, director, and actors is still lacking, but given the game's success, a prominent cast is likely.
Josef Fares himself could play an interesting role in the production. Before his career as a game designer, he worked as a film director before dedicating himself entirely to developing interactive stories. Although he has since distanced himself from the film world – not least because of his legendary "F*** the Oscars"-Speech at the Game Awards – it would be conceivable that he is at least involved in an advisory capacity in the film adaptation.
Why Split Fiction is perfect for a film adaptation
The story of "Split Fiction" certainly provides an exciting basis for a film adaptation: Two young authors, Mio and Zoe, are invited by a tech company to test a new writing technology. But the experiment goes wrong, and they suddenly find themselves inside the stories they created – a blend of science fiction and fantasy. Only by working together can they escape the virtual world.
Whether the film adaptation of "Split Fiction" will actually see the light of day remains to be seen. After all, an adaptation of "It Takes Two" was already announced in 2022, without any significant progress being reported since. Fans of the game should therefore remain cautiously optimistic. Until then, "Split Fiction" remains one of the best co-op experiences on console and PC – and a film we will hopefully soon be able to see in theaters.
Until then, "Split Fiction" is highly recommended as a game, from which we can draw our impressions. current review have recorded.
