The community's calls were unmistakable, and now Toys for Bob has delivered the proof. The players' persistence has made the first true, new Spyro adventure – Spyro: A Realm Beyond – in 18 years possible.
Toys for Bob is bringing back the purple dragon because 11 million units sold of the Reignited Trilogy is an argument no publisher can ignore. Studio head Paul Yan and Associate Creative Director Lou Studdert explained this in an interview with GamesRadar I spoke plainly.
After parting ways with Microsoft and becoming independent, the studio faced a significant risk. The decision to focus on Spyro over franchises like Banjo-Kazooie ultimately proved to be pure logic. For years, the fanbase had delivered at every single gaming event, relentlessly demanding a sequel. This outpouring of support finally convinced Microsoft to fund the project.
Why it was Spyro and not Banjo
The team sees itself as the small, feisty underdog – just like Spyro. The emotional connection they forged through working on Skylanders and the remaster trilogy was immense. The success of titles like "Astro Bot" also demonstrates to the studio that classic platformers are extremely popular in the modern market. Toys for Bob aims to fill this gap.
Rumors from within the industry suggest that this wasn't all. According to insiders, a new Crash Bandicoot game is already in development. The platformer renaissance is in full swing. Toys for Bob is delivering.
The return of “Spyro: A Realm Beyond“This isn't a product of chance, but the well-deserved result of an extremely loyal community. Toys for Bob is passionate about the brand, and the risk of independence provides the necessary focus. If the gameplay maintains the same level as before, we can expect a real highlight.”
What do you think of the decision to go with Spyro – would you have found a new Banjo-Kazooie more exciting to kick off the Microsoft collaboration?
