Sony fans have waited a long time, and now it finally seems to be happening: The iconic gray box, which shaped the childhoods of many, is getting its own brick-built version. After the NES, Game Boy, and Atari, LEGO is thus filling one of the biggest gaps in gaming history.
The rumor mill is churning, and the leak didn't come from nowhere. With around 1900 pieces, the LEGO PS1 is expected to hit store shelves in December, just in time for the Christmas shopping season. The fact that the piece count is slightly lower than the LEGO NES is likely due to the design – instead of a bulky CRT television, the set will probably focus entirely on the console and the iconic controller.
For what appears to be €160, we're not getting a toy here, but a genuine display piece for the shelf behind us in the stream. A fair price, considering how meticulously LEGO collaborated with Sony on the Horizon series.
Nostalgia meets construction technology
The implementation of the mechanics will be particularly interesting. Who doesn't remember that satisfying click when you pressed the "Open" button to insert the disc? LEGO If it manages to faithfully recreate the internal components, including the laser drive, this thing will be a must-buy.
The controller – presumably still without the analog sticks that were later introduced – is the centerpiece. Perfecting the shape of the grips made from angular stones is a real challenge for the designers. It's the logical continuation of a strategy that finally takes us gamers seriously and honors our classics as pop culture.
This is exactly the kind of filler we need between major releases. The original PlayStation was the gateway to the 3D world for many of us. The fact that LEGO is now so prominently honoring Sony's history, following Nintendo's success, demonstrates how closely intertwined the brands have become. The production run suggests a compact yet extremely detailed model – perfect for a desk.
Which iconic PS1 game absolutely has to be hidden in this set as a small "Easter egg" or mini-model?
There will also be an Xbox 360 version; I saw it on Held der Steine.
