Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio will release the action-adventure game "Stranger than Heaven" on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. The title will be included in Xbox Game Pass from day one.
Besides a confirmed release date, one particular detail is causing quite a stir. The rapper Tupac Shakur, who died in 1996, will be integrated into the game as a playable character named Amaru.
The digital reconstruction
According to official statements, the developers are completely foregoing generative AI in the creation of the character model. The reconstruction, instead, is based on classic CGI work, utilizing archival material and photographs. A contract with the estate administrator, Amaru Entertainment, provides the legal basis for this.
Snoop Dogg and his son Cordell Broadus are also on board as voice actors and performers. The lineup of musicians is completed by Satoshi Fujihara, Ado and Tori Kelly. They not only contribute to the soundtrack, but also appear in the game.
Historical context and technology
"Stranger than Heaven“It deliberately abandons the traditional structure of the Like a Dragon series. The story spans 50 years and is divided into five eras between 1915 and 1965. Players control the Japanese-American protagonist Makoto Daito in five different cities, including Kokura and Shinjuku.”
The combat system also uses dual controls. The character's left and right sides are controlled independently via separate buttons. This requires mechanical precision when timing blocks and counterattacks.
The game is powered by the in-house Dragon Engine. On current-generation consoles, the target is 60 frames per second at native 4K resolution. The PC version on Steam offers unlimited frame rates and dedicated graphics settings for upscaling.
The January 15, 2027 release date sends a clear message against the overcrowded Christmas season, and after the initial hype surrounding "GTA 6" should have subsided. Technically, RGG Studio delivers an experiment: the dual combat mechanics and the era-based structure are risky, but consistent. Integrating Tupac Shakur without AI assistance is a technically demanding approach. Xbox Game Pass subscribers can test the system at no extra cost. For everyone else, the first gameplay analyses of the final PC and PS5 versions will determine whether or not to buy it.
