Subnautics 2 is approaching Early Access – but without its founders. Following the surprising dismissal of the three studio co-founders, the community is shocked – and not only them. Charlie Cleveland, co-founder of Unknown Worlds and original game director of SubnauticaHe publicly commented on the situation over the weekend. His conclusion: The game is ready, the developers are no longer involved – and that hurts.
A clean break – or a quiet power shift?
Cleveland CEO Ted Gill and co-founder Max McGuire were relieved of their duties at Unknown Worlds last week, according to parent company Krafton. A specific reason for this has yet to be given. What has been made public, however, is the new leadership: Steve Papoutsis, most recently responsible for... The Callisto Protocol, takes over as new CEO.
For many fans, this feels like a break with the DNA of SubnauticaBecause: Cleveland itself stressedthat the game “ready for Early Access“ and the team “he put his heart and soul into it“I have made statements that one wouldn't necessarily have expected with a departure shortly before publication.”
The developer calls the step “a shock“—not only for himself, but also for the remaining team. That Krafton, as the owner, now has sole control over the project is no surprise—but the way the change was carried out is.
The sequel is coming – but with question marks
Officially, it remains Subnautics 2 A classic single-player experience without battle passes, loot boxes, or subscription models. This was emphasized again after the change in leadership – apparently to reassure the community. Nevertheless, a bitter aftertaste remains: many wonder whether the game can retain its character without its original team.
