The same formula doesn't always work, and that's also true for Telltale Games, who have produced several new IPs in recent years. Some with huge success, some with less. Among the latter is 'Tales from the Borderlands', which was internally known as "Failure" referred to as.
This can currently be seen in the The Campo Santo Quarterly Review I read about it in a journal for developers who exchange information about the industry. It states that while Tales from the Borderlands has financially recouped its production costs, it's nowhere near the success of The Walking Dead. Yet the reviews were quite positive and didn't suggest it would be a flop.
The failure of Tales from the Borderlands was apparently already apparent during the development of the individual episodes, leading to pressure from management to complete them so they could return to more successful franchises. They "complained" that sometimes only one person per department worked on an entire episode, which was clearly insufficient. Ultimately, they are still proud of the project, even though the chances of a sequel are rather slim.
Telltale Games has recently launched the second season of Batman, Minecraft: Story Mode is also running in parallel, and the second season of The Wolf Among Us will follow next year.
