With the Revolution Pro Controller 3 Hardware manufacturer Nacon is launching a hybrid controller for PlayStation 4 and PC that promises all the features of the DualShock 4 plus additional functionality. We've thoroughly tested the device and are sharing our impressions with you.
What's immediately noticeable is that the controller's shape and the layout of its controls are based on the Xbox controller. Unlike the DualShock series, the two joysticks aren't parallel to each other, but slightly offset, with the D-pad and left joystick swapping positions. In terms of handling, the Revolution Pro Controller 3 is actually closest to the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller – although it is somewhat bulkier overall. The Nacon controller is generally less slim than Sony's own product line and should offer a better grip, especially for those with larger hands. This also applies to the buttons: the action buttons are larger than those on the original PlayStation 4 controller. The joysticks are also slightly longer, but this allows for very precise control.
The Revolution Pro Controller 3 features three different modes: PS4 mode, PS4 Advanced mode, and PC mode. These can be selected via a three-position switch on the underside. In PS4 mode, the controller supports the core features that are very familiar from the DualShock 4: motion sensors, such as those recently used in the DualShock 4. Concrete Genie The controls included a touchpad, dual vibration, headset jack, PS, Share, Options, L1-L3, and R1-R3 buttons, as well as directional and action buttons. In addition, there are four shortcut buttons on the inside of the two grips: all functions (except PS, Share, Options, and the touchpad) can be assigned to these by pressing and holding them for three seconds and then confirming the selection with the desired button. This is practical because it allows you to operate certain elements that would normally require you to put the joystick down – for example, the D-pad.
The PS4 Advanced Mode takes it a step further and allows you to personalize the controller – but only with the appropriate software. This is available on the Nacon website Available as a free download for PC and Mac. This allows you to fine-tune the joysticks and D-pad, and customize all buttons to your liking. Vibration intensity can even be adjusted individually for each side of the controller. Furthermore, you can create up to four profiles with your preferred settings. The PC mode works similarly, except that it applies the settings for PC use.
A nice extra: The package includes small weights (2 x 10g, 2 x 14g, and 2 x 16g) that can be easily inserted into the controller's grip to improve the feel. Overall, the Revolution Pro Controller 3 can be customized to your liking. Visually, it looks quite stylish and high-quality. The Nacon Companion App even allows you to adjust the backlighting for the right joystick.
There are a few flaws, though: For example, we noticed that the motion sensors stop working as soon as a headset or headphones are connected to the controller's built-in jack. We found that a bit odd. And, what might be a deal-breaker for many: The Revolution Pro Controller 3 doesn't have a built-in battery. In other words, it only works with a cable. For hardware in this price range (€109,99), that's very disappointing. While the included cable does have a range of three meters, we would have preferred a wireless connection. On the plus side, we didn't experience any connection drops or similar issues.
