With 'The Evil Within', a new attempt is being made to revive the horror genre, and there are some good approaches being pursued.
Instead of continuing to focus on the shooter and action genres, The Evil Within will draw heavily on Resident Evil, according to Bethesda's Pete Hines. expressed.
"I think The Evil Within draws inspiration from the first Resident Evil. Resident Evil 4 was a departure from pure survival horror, as envisioned by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. It was a mix of both: there was plenty of action, lots to explore, and ample resource management. And there were countless quick-time events. Mikami tried it, he succeeded, and he's done with the subject—and now he wants to return to the genre's roots. That doesn't mean Resident Evil 4 is a bad game, though—it's brilliant! But Mikami felt that the game was straying from what he originally wanted to create in many ways."
The Evil Within is currently being developed for PS3 and PS4 and will be released in 2014.
