How many times have we heard this sentence already? "The Last Guardian is still in development," as Sony France has now reaffirmed.
The trademark registration for the name, which Sony apparently retained despite requests for renewal, caused concern about the title. let expireA spokesperson for Sony France disagrees, stating that work on the title is still ongoing and that they are waiting for the right moment to re-introduce the game. This same statement has been repeated for months. Is it simply an internal directive? Possibly, considering the following opinion:
An alleged insider chimed in on the NeoGAF forum, swearing by his "many sources" within Sony who supposedly told him the game was long dead. He wished it was just a joke, but it wasn't.
The reason Sony doesn't simply say that development has already been canceled is supposedly due to contractual obligations with the original developer, Fumito Ueda. If Sony were to officially halt development, the rights to the franchise would revert to Ueda, which is why the game is being kept in development indefinitely and artificially. However, no one can currently confirm how much truth there is to this claim.
So, we can only wait and see whether The Last Guardian will actually see the light of day or remain lost forever.
