The fact that 'The Last Guardian', which Sony announced for PlayStation 4 at E3, is even being released is mainly thanks to the fans.
Had people not repeatedly asked for the game, it would likely have simply disappeared, as Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony World Wide Studios, states in the current issue of Edge Magazine. The development was extremely difficult, and they weren't even sure if it was possible.
“Of course we believed in Ueda-san’s vision, and Ueda-san and the core team were determined to make it a reality, so I did it. And after so many people asked us about the game, it was a great encouragement for us to continue developing it.”
When asked whether a complete cancellation of the project had been considered, Yoshida said:
"If people had stopped asking for it, we probably would have done it."
Ultimately, everything turned out well and according to the current schedule, 'The Last Guardian' will be released next year.
