What if... The Last of Us Part 2 Could you experience the events in the order they actually happened? Naughty Dog answers precisely this question – with the new "Chronological Experience" mode, available now as free update available for the remastered version. But while the studio speaks of a "deeper insight" into the story, the question remains: Is it really necessary?
A new experience for old hands – or a step backwards?
The original from The Last of Us Part 2 The story is deliberately told in a non-linear fashion. Flashbacks, time jumps, and shifts in emotional perspective are all part of the game's narrative core. This structure not only creates suspense but also forces players to confront morally challenging questions. Those who experience Ellie and Abby's story only chronologically risk missing these nuances.
For fans who have already completed the game, the chronology mode can offer an exciting change of perspective. You'll discover new connections, see parallels between the characters – or realize just how close Ellie and Abby actually are to each other. It's a bit like a director's cut for connoisseurs.
Besides the new mode, there are also a few rewards to be had. Who The Last of Us Part 2 Completing the game in chronological order unlocks two new skins – including Joel as Nathan Drake and Tommy as Sam Drake. Sure, it's pure fan service for Naughty Dog's 40th anniversary, but hey: if it's a remaster, at least it should have a wink and a smile.
There are also some technical tweaks. Patch 2.1.0 for the PS5 and 1.5 for PC deliver minor performance improvements and bug fixes – not a revolution, but welcome nonetheless.
A nice extra, but not a new gameplay experience.
The "Chronological Experience" is not a game changer. It doesn't change the fundamental strengths – or weaknesses – of The Last of Us Part 2Those who love the game will discover a new perspective here. Those who couldn't get into the original won't be converted this time either.
But that's not the point. Naughty Dog's update demonstrates that we listen, we experiment, and we're not afraid to question our own narrative style – without sacrificing it entirely. That deserves respect.
It will also be released in a few days The Last of Us Complete – the ultimate Complete Collector's Edition – with new features, stunning graphics and exclusive collectibles for true fans!
What do you think of the new Chrono mode – a useful addition or a superfluous gimmick? Let us know in the comments!
Part 2 remastered was nominated for the Gay Games Awards 2025 (this award actually exists).
congratulation
I would like a Joel mode, and also why not Nathan, Sam, and maybe even Dean as playable characters? That would have more impact than just clothes.
