Activision continues to keep their survival shooter The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct a big secret, with hardly anything seen so far based on outdated footage.
Accordingly, there is considerable concern that we are in for nothing more than a poorly executed licensed game – a run-of-the-mill, generic shooter, if you will. Developer Terminal Reality is now attempting, shortly before release, to dispel the notion that it is a pure shooter and is emphasizing the survival aspect.
"Yes, the game has weapons – just like in The Walking Dead comics and TV show – but isn't it a bit silly to assume that Survival Instinct is just a repaint of the Zombie mode in Black Ops II?"
Designer Glenn Gamble explained that players take on the roles of Daryl and Merle Dixon, fleeing their home state of Georgia to reach a safe military zone in Atlanta. Players can choose their own route, though resources will always be the primary concern. You're free to do whatever you want. You can recruit other survivors, gather resources, and do all the things that will help you along the way and increase your chances of survival.
It's understandable that Activision is primarily associated with Call of Duty, and therefore there are legitimate concerns surrounding The Walking Dead. However, it seems that we ourselves have little influence over Activision's PR efforts and must continue to hope that the game will truly be more than just another run-of-the-mill shooter.
The Walking Dead: Survival Intinct will be released next week.
