Amazon reveals Sophie Turner as Lara Croft for the first time in the new Tomb Raider series. Here's the story behind it, how the games and the series are connected, and why it's important.

Amazon has the first look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft Released, the new Tomb Raider series is taking concrete shape. At the same time, Crystal Dynamics confirmed that the series and games will be more closely integrated in the future. Two facts that should make fans sit up and take notice.

Sophie Turner as Lara Croft

Sophie Turner has big shoes to fill. Angelina Jolie shaped Lara Croft into an action icon of the early 2000s, while Alicia Vikander brought more grounding to the character. Turner is now taking a different path, characterized by less glitz and more character development. Those who know her from Game of Thrones Anyone who knows her knows that she can credibly switch between vulnerability and determination – exactly what Lara Croft needs today.

Amazon is clearly prioritizing quality behind the scenes. With Phoebe Waller-Bridge as writer and executive producer, a creative force known for sharp dialogue and strong characters is at the helm. This isn't a guaranteed success, but it's a significantly better starting point than many half-hearted game adaptations.

Tomb Raider as a series universe, not just a TV show

Things get interesting when you look at the bigger picture. Crystal Dynamics CEO Scott Amos openly states that Tomb Raider is intended to be a cross-media franchise going forward. The series and games are meant to fit together thematically without explaining each other.

Parallel to the series are two new games in development. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis reinterprets the series' origin, while Tomb Raider: Catalyst (2027) tells a completely new story and takes Lara to northern India. This shows that there is long-term planning involved and that the series is not just being created as a marketing gimmick.

The greatest strength of this approach is also its greatest risk. If the series and games are too closely intertwined, accessibility suffers. If they remain too loosely connected, the synergy effect is lost. Currently, however, Amazon's strategy seems surprisingly down-to-earth: deliver first, then link.

The new Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner doesn't feel like a quick reboot, but rather a deliberate reboot. To be honest, there are still no trailers, story details, or a release date. But the foundation is solid. If Amazon maintains the right balance between character, adventure, and respect for the source material, Lara Croft could finally land back where she belongs: at the heart of a strong, contemporary adventure franchise.

In addition to Tomb Raider, the Kratos actor in the God of War series presented by Amazon.
